Visit Malaysia 2026 Launches with a Spectacular New Year Celebration in Kuala Lumpur

The arrival of 2026 brought an extra-special reason to celebrate as Malaysia officially launched Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026). The year-long national tourism campaign is led by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC). Its goal is clear: attract more international travellers and strengthen Malaysia’s position on the global tourism stage.

The official launch took place on 31 December 2025 at the VM2026 Countdown Festival in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. Thousands of local residents and international visitors gathered in the city centre to welcome the New Year. The event set a confident and ambitious tone for the tourism campaign ahead.

A high-profile collaboration between The Fame Events, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur and MOTAC transformed the area into a multi-sensory showcase. The night featured pyromusical fireworks synchronised to music, large-scale drone formations, laser displays and striking 3D anamorphic projections. A carefully curated lineup of live performances completed the spectacle. Together, these elements delivered a visually powerful launch that highlighted Malaysia’s creative strength and technical capability.

Strong support from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and Tourism Malaysia played a key role in the event’s success. Their involvement reflected a coordinated public-private approach to promoting Malaysia internationally. As a launch moment, the VM2026 Countdown Festival proved to be an impactful starting point for a campaign that will continue throughout the year.

Speaking at the launch, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia Tiong King Sing described the celebration as a symbolic spark for the year ahead. He said Malaysia is fully prepared to welcome the world and showcase its cultural richness, creative industries and renowned hospitality. The campaign is supported by a national target of 43 million international visitor arrivals, underscoring Malaysia’s confidence and long-term tourism vision.

The countdown was led by Guest of Honour Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia. His presence reinforced the national importance of Visit Malaysia 2026. The evening also highlighted Malaysia’s vibrant contemporary music scene. Performances by leading local artistes including Shila Amzah, Aina Abdul, Belle Sisoski, Vanessa Reynauld, Kidd Santhe, The Kuans, KLP48, Nazu, Rezza Shah, Danson Ooi, Euzen and Penny energized the crowd. Cultural showcases were woven between performances, blending traditional rhythms with modern sounds and reflecting Malaysia’s multi-ethnic identity.

Satellite Events

The celebrations extended well beyond New Year’s Eve. From 26 December 2025, a series of satellite events animated key areas across Kuala Lumpur. Highlights included the VM2026 Bazaar at Pavilion Bukit Jalil and the VM2026 Arts & Culture Showcase at Fahrenheit 88. Visitors enjoyed cultural pop-ups, interactive art demonstrations and live creative displays. Hands-on workshops offered opportunities to try batik painting, porcelain-making and wau kite decoration.

Food was another major draw. At the VM2026 Bukit Bintang Food Bazaar in Lot 10, visitors sampled a curated mix of traditional Malaysian dishes and modern interpretations. The experience reinforced Malaysia’s reputation as one of Southeast Asia’s most exciting culinary destinations.

Throughout the festive period, the city streets came alive with daily DJ sets, roaming buskers and energetic flash mobs at the Bukit Bintang Crossing. Adding a playful element, VM2026’s Malayan Sun Bear mascots appeared around KLCC and Kwai Chai Hong, delighting visitors and increasing campaign visibility.

Looking ahead, Visit Malaysia 2026 will roll out a carefully curated calendar of events nationwide. These will include cultural and ethnic festivals, tourism showcases and special-interest events. A strong focus will also be placed on MICE activities, alongside large-scale international promotions. Together, these initiatives aim to sustain momentum and deliver meaningful travel experiences across the country.
