Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon is located within Wat Nong Wang in Khon Kaen city, Thailand. It is one of the most important Buddhist landmarks in Northeastern Thailand. The nine-storey stupa was built to commemorate the 50th anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s reign and the 200th anniversary of Khon Kaen’s establishment.
The structure stands approximately 80 metres high with a square base measuring about 50 metres on each side. Each of its nine levels serves a specific religious and educational function. The lower floors display Buddhist relics and alms bowls, while the middle levels feature murals and wood carvings illustrating the life of the Buddha, Jataka tales, and cultural scenes from the Isan region. The upper floors contain historical artefacts and Buddha images, with the ninth level housing the main relic chamber and providing a panoramic view over Khon Kaen city and Bueng Kaen Nakhon Lake.
The stupa follows a symmetrical design typical of modern northeastern Thai religious architecture. Its structure combines concrete and gilded ornamentation, with naga (serpent) sculptures flanking the stairways and detailed bas-relief panels depicting Buddhist iconography. The building’s design reflects both religious symbolism and regional identity, providing space for worship, education, and cultural interpretation.
